COSMETIC TATTOO FAQ
YOUR FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ANSWERED
Cosmetic Tattoo is also known as micro-pigmentation or permanent makeup.
It is a non-surgical procedure where small amount of pigment is placed just under the top layer of the skin. The skin then heals over the pigment sealing in the colour and creating a waterproof barrier.
It is a cost effective and time-saving alternative to constantly applying make-up with a pencil or brush to the eyebrows, eyelids and lips.
The objective is to create a subtle enhancement which will give you several years of care-free, waterproof, run and smudge proof makeup.
Gayle Smith is one of Australia’s most experienced and qualified micro-pigmentation specialists who has treated hundreds of clients and has seen firsthand how much it can enhance the appearance and confidence of men and women of all ages.
Clients from all over Australia flock to see Gayle as they trust her experience and expertise to enhance their appearance by giving them an attractive, natural look that suits their unique features and lifestyle, not the current trends.

Cosmetic tattooing is a very safe procedure.
The cosmetic tattoo machine is a small, pen-like device that uses completely disposable parts. All needles, tubes, chambers, caps, casings – anything that comes into contact with your skin is brand new and sealed prior to your treatment.
We use an iron oxide pigment (not carbon ink like regular tattoos), which is natural and safe to use.
To ensure our clients receive the best treatment possible, Gayle only uses the best-quality equipment and has the highest safety and hygiene standards.
To minimise pain, Gayle uses a strong numbing/anaesthetic agent throughout the procedure. She constantly checks during the treatment if you are feeling any pain and applies more anaesthetic if required.
Many clients comment that they are surprised at how little they actual felt.
Most of our clients want a very natural and groomed look but we can give you more a more obvious and dramatic effect if that is what you desire.
On your first appointment we can give you a subtle look so you can get a feel for what it is like then boost the colour as much as you like on your second touch up appointment.
Gayle will give you her professional advice and will ALWAYS shape your brows and colour your lips to best suit your facial features.
The price for each treatment varies depending on your individual needs and will be outlined at your initial consultation. Your quoted price will include:

- Two weeks before: try and avoid the use of face creams that have anti-aging and acne-controlling ingredients.
- You must discontinue use of any Eyelash growth serums (Latisse, Eyenvy, etc) for 4 weeks before and 4 weeks after your initial and touch up appointments.
- Remove any false eyelashes and any traces of glue prior to your appointment.
- We highly recommend that you start a course of antiviral tablets (Elovax, Famvir, Zovirax etc) a few days prior to your treatment and continue a few days after. Please seek your pharmacist’s advice on this. This is to prevent cold sore outbreak. If you have ever had a cold sore (even as a child) the procedure can trigger an outbreak.
At your appointment, Gayle will apply a topical numbing agent for about 15 minutes to ensure you are comfortable during your treatment.
After removing the cream we will confirm your desired shape and pigment.
Gayle will measure, map and draw (with pencil) your perfect eyeliner, brow or lip style and shape. You can make any adjustments to the style and shape prior to starting. You see and confirm your shape before I proceed with placing any pigment into the skin. This way there are no surprises.
It is important that during the procedure you relax and stay as still as possible. You should feel minimum pain and alert us if it is getting uncomfortable in any way.
Gayle will communicate with you during the procedure to advise where she is at and how much longer the treatment will take.
Aftercare is a very important part of any cosmetic tattoo treatment. Without proper aftercare pigment can lift from the treated area causing your results to be uneven or patchy.
We recommend the following steps be followed to ensure that you heal as well as possible.
Your new cosmetic tattoo will begin to darken by the end of day and may continue to appear darker and larger (thicker, bigger) than you would like. This is normal and part of the body’s natural healing process. DO NOT PANIC! This is expected.
Swelling (if any) should subside within a few days. You must follow the aftercare instructions provided to you for best results.
Most importantly, DO NOT PICK OR PEEL YOUR SCABS! Doing so may result in scarring, uneven patchy colour, and prolong redness.
Dry-healing is best! It is unusual to get swelling, however if it does occur simply use a cold compress for 5 mins every 6 hours.
There is usually very minimal pain after, only a slight tenderness around the eyebrow Tattoo.
Immediatly after and for the next 24 hours continue to wipe eyebrows. They will weep a clear fluid (this is normal). Wipe them firmly to remove the fluid otherwise crusting or scabbing will build up.
Keep a fine smear of the healing cream we give you over the eyebrow area approx 4 times a day for 5 days.
- Day 1 – For 24 hours after the procedure do not get the area wet. If needed you can dab the area with a clean cotton pad to remove any excess plasma and help reduce scabbing.
- Day 2 – It is okay to get your brow area wet, but do not wash directly or rub/touch your brows. Do not apply any moisturizing or makeup products to your eyebrows.
- Days 3-10 -Continue to keep your eyebrows as dry as possible and refrain from using any products.
Once all scabbing has naturally fallen off, it is okay to go back to your normal routines for makeup, moisturiser, and cleansing.
Eyeliner tattoos takes approximately 5 days to heal completely. Keep the area make up free and clean during the healing time. Apply the healing cream we give you 1-2 times daily (with a cotton tip or very clean hands) to keep the area from irritation.
It is normal to have swelling of lips after tattooing, especially with a full lip tattoo. Use a cold pack for 5 mins every few hours for 24 hours to reduce swelling.
There is generally no pain after only dryness on the lips.
- Lip color tattoos take about 3-5 days to peel. You must keep the area hydrated with the healing cream we give you. Be sure to apply with a cotton tip or very clean hands. You must keep the area clean and make up less.
- Avoid salty, vinegary & spicy foods during the healing time.
- If you are prone to cold sores, continue to take antiviral tablets (Elovax, Famvir, Zovirax etc). Consult your pharmacist.
LIP TATTOO NOTES:
The colour will be very pronounced over the first few days then it will becoming lighter. The true colour will show through 4-6weeks later.
The colour will look a little different at various times of day depending on your own skin responses and different lighting.
You must have a touch up visit 4-6weeks after the initial lip tattoo to retain colour.
Lipstick cannot be worn for 5 days after treatment.
If you feel any adjustment to shape or colour is required, you must allow 4 weeks for the skin to heel before tattooing can be done again.
With eyebrow treatments, typically the area around your treatment may be slightly red, but that should be the only after-effect. Going back to work or getting on with your day should be no problem.
With eyeliner treatments they can be swollen and bruised, this can be managed through cold packs on and off for up to 24 hours, so plan a quiet 24-48 hours.
With the lip tattoo, your lips will be swollen and the colour effect of the tattoo very pronounced. You will experience moderate pain and your lips will be dry, tight and slightly uncomfortable so it is advisable to plan a quiet day or two after this procedure.
To ensure the perfect balance of your eyeliner, brows or lips, you will be required to come back for a touch up 4-6 weeks after your initial procedure.
This is where we check for balance within the healing process and adjust accordingly.
We recommend booking a freshen up appointment every 12 – 18 months or so to boost the colour and maintain the shape.
